Things took a turn once Jan Levinson (Melora Hardin) got a boob job. She used it to get Michael Scott (Steve Carell) back on The Office. This is how her boob job was made to look so real.

Jan got a boob job on ‘The Office’

Jan started out as Michael’s serious boss. But once their relationship goes from professional to romantic her character changes.

In season 3, Jan decides to make a big change by getting a boob job. This is after her breakup with Michael and she reveals this to get him back.

“After you ended everything with us I went on a vacation to kind of clear my mind,” she told him. “I feel good about myself for the first time in a really long time and I made some big changes in my life and I miss you. I want us to get back together.”

Michael checks in with the women of the office and he reveals he doesn’t want to go back to dating her. When he goes to reject Jan she is now wearing a low cut top revealing she got a boob job.

“Jan is in a different place right now and it is a sign of maturity to give people second chances,” Michael said. “So I’m going to hear her out.”

Everyone else in the office also notices Jan’s change. Michael then decides to take her back.

So did Hardin actually get surgery? Jenna Fischer, who played Pam Beesly, and Angela Kinsey, who played Angela Martin, answered this question on the Office Ladies podcast.

“No, she didn’t,” Fischer said. “They designed this crazy bra for her that was filled with like a gazillion little cutlets, and then they did this makeup shadowing on her chest to create even more allusion of like swollen cleavage and all of that.”

“I do remember poor Melora from this point forward would have to put that on for every episode now,” she added. Hardin said she had a meeting with Greg Daniels to talk about how big Jan would go for her breast augmentation. Kinsey said the actor had many fans come up to her and ask if she really did get surgery.

This was the beginning of her spiral

Jan’s boob job seems to be the beginning of her downward spiral. She soon gets fired for her “erratic behavior”. She gets called out for smoking in her office, online shopping, and leaving work to do other things. She believes she’s getting fired for her boob job and eventually sues the company.

This puts Michael in a very awkward position. It’s probably not a surprise that they end up breaking up again.

So Jan’s boob job did make for a funny joke. But it is an important marker for her character’s journey.
